A man aged 34, who suffered from mental disturbances, underwent emergency surgery in the Peruvian city of Cajamarca to withdraw about a kilo of nails, coins and other metal objects from the stomach, informed the state news agency Andina.

The man, identified as Requelme Abanto Alvarado, he underwent emergency by the surgeon Carlos Delgado Cruz, Regional Hospital of Cajamarca in northern Peru. Delgado Cruz testified that the patient reached the hospital early Friday from the province of Celendín with his sister and other relatives.

As presented severe abdominal pain, doctors found that he had foreign objects in the stomach, so we performed an exploratory laparoscopy.

According to the report, Abanto's stomach about a kilo of nails up to four inches long, and coins, a piece of saw, pieces of brass wire and rusty. "In all my years of experience I never saw something similar," the surgeon said to Andina.

Delgado explained that "this is a psychiatric patient who refuses to speak and his family does not know how he could have swallowed nails and other objects. Abanto is recovering in the hospital's surgery area, although he will remain under observation for several days to rule out any possible infection and prevent re-ingesting foreign objects.

The patient is also evaluated by the medical team's mental health hospital, surgeon.
